File extension mof information

The file extension .MOF stands for Systems Management Server (SMS) management object format. Microsoft applications use SMS to provide configuration and change management solutions that deliver updates and relevant software. This system management tool is used to serve two functions, namely managing and operating assortments of network environments. SMS enables network resources and network environments to be controlled from a central point. The core or central control point of SMS is its administrator console, while the core or center of SMS data presentation and collection is WBEM (web-based enterprise management).
SMS serves various functions, including resource discovery, software distribution, software metering and network analysis including software and hardware inventory. Another function of SMS is remote support done through the use of remote tools. SMS has an administrator console, which is used for accessing and initiating the above functions. Resource discovery is a process that has to be performed before network hardware, computers, users and groups can be found. The SMS site is used to specify users, groups, resources and networking hardware. SMS environments are made up of multiple or single SMS sites.
